ABOUT HASH-MORPH
Hash-Morph appends 4 cryptographically random bytes to the end of any file, changing its SHA-256 fingerprint without altering the file's actual content. Due to SHA-256's avalanche effect, even a single bit change produces a completely different 256-bit digest. Images still render, documents still open, and executables still run. The appended bytes sit past the end of the file format's structure.
USE CASES
- Break hash-based file tracking systems that correlate copies of the same file
- Generate fresh fingerprints for privacy research or red-team exercises
- Test forensic tools and intrusion detection systems that monitor file hashes
- Create unique copies of identical files for version control or deduplication experiments
FREQUENTLY ASKED
Will the morphed file still work normally?+
Yes. Most file formats (JPEG, PNG, PDF, DOCX, ZIP, MP3) ignore data appended after the format's end-of-file marker. The 4 bytes are effectively invisible to any application that reads the file.
How does appending bytes change the hash so dramatically?+
SHA-256 processes the entire byte stream of a file. Adding even 1 byte changes the input, and the avalanche effect guarantees the output is completely different. There is no mathematical relationship between the original and morphed hash.
Is hash morphing legal?+
Hash-Morph is a privacy and research tool. Using it to circumvent DRM, tamper with evidence, or alter files in violation of laws or agreements is your responsibility. The tool appends data in a way that does not modify the file's functional content.
