ABOUT METASTRIP
MetaStrip reads and removes embedded metadata from JPEG, PNG, WebP, MP3, DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files. For images, it strips EXIF (including GPS coordinates), IPTC, XMP, and Adobe metadata segments. For audio, it removes ID3v2 headers and ID3v1 tags. For Office documents, it purges the core.xml properties (author, company, dates) and app.xml metadata. All operations happen locally in your browser. The files never leave your device.
USE CASES
- Remove GPS coordinates and camera model before posting photos publicly
- Clean author and revision history from Word documents before sharing externally
- Strip ID3 tags (artist, album, recording location) from audio files
- Prepare files for anonymous submission: job applications, legal filings, contest entries
- Verify what metadata is embedded in a file before deciding whether to share it
FREQUENTLY ASKED
What metadata is hidden in my photos?+
Modern smartphones embed GPS coordinates, device make and model, software version, timestamps, orientation, and camera settings (ISO, aperture, shutter speed). This data is invisible when viewing the photo but trivially readable with any EXIF viewer.
Can metadata reveal my location?+
Yes. If you photograph something with location services enabled, the exact latitude and longitude is stored in the EXIF data. Anyone who receives the photo can extract this with free tools online.
Why do Office files contain hidden metadata?+
When you create or edit a Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file, Office records the author name, company, editing time, revision count, and sometimes comments and track changes. This can inadvertently reveal your identity and editing history when you share documents externally.
